THROWING GASOLINE ON HAITI´S FIRES

"On June 23, the U.S. State Department briefed members of Congress on its plan to distribute thousands of handguns to the Haitian National Police, continuing a program that sent 2,657 weapons to Haiti for the police last year, despite an embargo.

Haiti’s citizens, especially the poor majority, are suffering under an epidemic of armed violence. Kidnappings and gun battles, between gangs, police and UN Peacekeepers have replaced the daily and nightly routine in downtown Port-au-Prince and many neighborhoods. In some areas, residents cannot leave for days, and spend nights praying that the bullets outside do not come through their thin walls. Almost everyone in the capitol alters their patterns of work, school, travel or sleep, to avoid being shot or kidnapped".

De como a administração Bush exporta o seu conceito de democracia.

THE U.S. AND IRAN: DEMOCRACY, TERRORISM, AND NUCLEAR WEAPONS

"The election of the hard-line Teheran mayor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, over former President Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani as the new head of Iran is undeniably a setback for those hoping to advance greater social and political freedom in that country. It should not necessarily be seen as a turn to the right by the Iranian electorate, however. The 70-year old Rafsanjani—a cleric and penultimate wheeler-dealer from the political establishment—was portrayed as the more moderate conservative. The fact that he had become a millionaire while in government was apparently seen as less important than his modest reform agenda. By contrast, the young Teheran mayor focused on the plight of the poor and cleaning up corruption".

Boa leitura.

FEEDING THE NUCLEAR FIRE

"...The clearest expression of this perspective comes from former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who seek the largest possible nuclear weapons capability. Vajpayee argues: that “Separating the civilian from the military would be very difficult, if not impossible… It will also deny us any flexibility in determining the size of our nuclear deterrent.” When he refers to “flexibility” in determining the size of the Indian nuclear arsenal, he does not include reducing or eliminating it. Rather, his term expresses the fear that separating civil and military facilities may curb the arsenal’s size".

GLOBAL WARMING PAST THE POINT OF NO RETURN

"A record loss of sea ice in the Arctic this summer has convinced scientists that the northern hemisphere may have crossed a critical threshold beyond which the climate may never recover. Scientists fear that the Arctic has now entered an irreversible phase of warming which will accelerate the loss of the polar sea ice that has helped to keep the climate stable for thousands of years".

ROBERTS THE ELDER - JOHN ROBERTS HAS AN UNDERSTATED PERSONALITY, BUT HIS RECORD WILL BE ALL TORPEDO.

"As John Roberts sits down before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week, its members will be searching to better understand the man who would become the 17th chief justice of the United States. If history is any guide, they will learn little about who John Roberts is and even less about who John Roberts will become. The problem with confirmation hearings is that, even with a forthcoming nominee, they offer only a snapshot of a jurist before he or sheenters the rarified and mind-altering world of the country's highest court".

"DIGNIFIED PROCESS"?

"The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of John Roberts to serve as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court began with an appropriate message from Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold.

A maverick within his own Democratic party and the Senate as a whole, Feingold called upon the committee, the full Senate and all of official Washington -- a city that frequently is more concerned about images than Constitutional duties -- to get serious about the monumental task that lies ahead".

UNFINISHED WARS

"This past February, just after finishing his fourth stint in Iraq for The New Yorker, George Packer moved into a cabin he shares in western Massachusetts. He had forty-four notebooks and a pile of interview transcripts. When he emerged in April, he had written a 160,000-word manuscript.

Farrar, Straus and Giroux will publish The Assassins’ Gate: America in Iraq in October. (It has been rushed through production to keep pace with the dozen other Iraq books that will appear this fall.) In his Brooklyn neighborhood in mid-June, Packer seems slightly manic, as if he’s still coasting on the energy that carried him through the book’s composition. He has a bland, boyish face and disarmingly gentle eyes, which probably serve him well as a reporter. It can take several minutes to realize how much skepticism and sheer ferocity he brings to a conversation".

KILLED BY CONTEMPT

"Each day since Katrina brings more evidence of the lethal ineptitude of federal officials. I'm not letting state and local officials off the hook, but federal officials had access to resources that could have made all the difference, but were never mobilized.
Here's one of many examples: The Chicago Tribune reports that the U.S.S. Bataan, equipped with six operating rooms, hundreds of hospital beds and the ability to produce 100,000 gallons of fresh water a day, has been sitting off the Gulf Coast since last Monday - without patients".

The Iraq Quagmire: The Mounting Costs of War and the Case for Bringing Home the Troops

“The Iraq Quagmire” is the most comprehensive accounting of the mounting costs and consequences of the Iraq War on the United States, Iraq, and the world. Among its major findings are stark figures that quantify the continuing of costs since the Iraqi elections, a period that the Bush administration claimed would be characterized by a reduction in the human and economic costs".
